- The Readiness Gap: Only 29% of parents feel their children are emotionally ready for secondary school. While 58% feel primary schools prepared their kids well, only 42% feel prospective secondary schools did enough.
- Top Anxieties: Parents' biggest worries center around child safety, helping kids adjust to the massive change, and the emotional sadness of childhood ending. Additionally, 62% are deeply worried about bullying, and 70% are concerned about the cost of secondary school uniforms.
- The Power of At-Home Chats: How parents talk to their kids makes a huge difference. Interestingly, parents who explicitly discuss self-sufficiency—telling their kids they won't be able to rely on teachers as much—report significantly higher emotional readiness in their children (82% vs. 48%).
- What Drives a Positive Outlook? A smoother, more positive transition expectation is heavily driven by four factors: excellent school communication, thorough preparation from secondary schools, confidence that a child's individual needs will be met, and a child's perceived emotional readiness.
- Gaps in Support: Although parents expect less individualised support in secondary school, they still hope their child's needs will be met. However, they flag major concerns over schools' capacities to handle emotional well-being and both diagnosed and undiagnosed special educational needs (SEN).
Moving Forward
To bridge these gaps, parents are calling for secondary schools to provide earlier and more detailed communication, offer more transition days, and create more opportunities for parent-staff meetings. WCC will use these insights to continue working alongside local schools and families to co-design better transition protocols.
